5 x 2 Dogme films

At the screening of new Dogme film '1n Your Hands' last night, the PR lady (seemed very nice, not too PRish) had arranged a spread of Danish snacks. This was brilliant: open small sandwiches like we learned at school that the Danes eat, tasty meatballs, some fishy things I passed up (not threw up, passed up) and some trapezoid marzipanish baked goods. To be sure: what's not to like?

Surprisingly, I've not seen too many Dogme films - half of Les Amants, most of Festen in bits ... that's it ... was Dancer In The Dark officially Dogme? - but I thought this was great. Set in a woman's prison, the 'in your hands' part refers to who or what you put your faith into: god, or a woman in the prison with seemingly miraculous abilities. The film was well-paced, engaging, interesting, full of Danish people and, as Pollymagoo described a film today, 'lots of other good things'.

I just saw 5x2 and enjoyed that, too. I mean, it's a bit bleak but I thought the beginning section was brilliant. Even-handed blend of engaging and mysterious.

Today my friend emailed me something like, 'I saw my sister at the weekend, she has a 14 year old daughter. Remeber when you were 14 and you thought you could do anything you wanted when you grew up? What happened to all that promise?'
Well, I did nearly cry at that and my (younger) colleagues barraged me (overstatement) with things I have achieved. Which, from their recent-graduate standpoint, looks good to them but a bit flat in the career dept to me. Like, 'you've made a real life for yourself here!' I'm like, yeah I've lived here for 8.5 years!

Anyway. I'm not being drawn down by it ... which in itself makes me worry that I've given up on myself a bit. I strongly hope I get over that.
